AMERICA 250 CELEBRATION

2026 is the 250th Anniversary of the United States

2026 is a pivotal year in American history. It is the semiquincentennial of the United States, better known as the 250th anniversary. In 1776, as the founding fathers were charting a course for a new country and colonists were engaged in a revolution, Fairfield County was covered by dense forests. The area was inhabited by native tribes, mainly the Wyandot and their chief: Tarhe. However, in 1796, the first non-native settlers - including soldiers who fought in the American Revolution - began making their way to the area.

Lancaster began to emerge as an important location. It was officially laid-out in 1800 and, when Fairfield County was established, it was selected as the county seat. Three years later, in 1803, Ohio became a state and, following the War of 1812, experienced one of the largest population booms in American history.

As we celebrate the country’s anniversary, FCHA will also be focusing on local history and encouraging locals to visit our museums to learn more about their past. For 2026, we will unveil two interactive tours, offer free admission on select days to the Sherman House and Georgian museums and unveil a billboard on Memorial Drive in May!

FCHA has some special plans for the America 250 celebration in 2026! We hope that you join us this year as we celebrate America 250 and encourage you to invite friends and family to experience local history! Check out some of the plans 2026:

FREE Entry to the Georgian Museum

Did you know that the Georgian Museum officially opened to the public 50 years ago?! It’s true! In May of 1976, the museum welcomed its first visitors and has remained a pillar of the community ever since.

To celebrate this milestone, we will offer FREE admission to the museum on Saturday, May 2nd to everyone! Come experience this beautiful mansion that has been lovingly restored to its 1832 glory. Filled with Fairfield County artifacts, items belonging to the original owners (Samuel and Sarah Maccracken) and a lower level that includes a Fairfield County History Exhibit, you will be transported back to a time of opulence and historical significance.

FREE Entry to the Sherman House

The Sherman House is also celebrating a major milestone in 2026 - 75 years in operation! In September of 1951, after years of negotiations, planning and preparation - the Sherman House officially opened as a museum.

Originally under the control of the Ohio Historical Society, the museum was transferred to the Fairfield County Heritage Association in 1982 and has remained in our care ever since. As the only museum in the country dedicated to the Sherman Family, visitors from all over the world have travelled to its door. If it has been several years since you have experienced this landmark then please consider returning on Saturday, September 5. On this day, we will be offering FREE admission.

Example sign for the Stones and Stories Trail with QR code

Stones & Stories Trail

Take a walk in Elmwood Cemetery (Lancaster, Ohio) and experience the “Stones & Stories Trail.” This unique and interactive trail allows visitors to learn more about some of the people buried in the historic cemetery.

How does it work? Near several headstones (around 10) you will find a sign with a QR code attached. Simply scan the QR code with your phone’s camera and click on the link that appears. It will take you to a video describing the person(s) that is buried at that location. The videos will be between 2-5 minutes in length and include photos and biographical information.

Can’t make it to the cemetery? No problem! The videos will be stored on our YouTube Channel so you will be able to access them anywhere at any time.

Michael Johnson will be creating the videos and we hope to have the program ready in May. If the trail proves to be successful and residents are enjoying it, we will look at doing the same thing in other cemeteries with more permanent signage.

History Underfoot Trail

An example of a decal that you will find in Downtown Lancaster for the “History Underfoot Trail.”

With so many historic locations in Downtown Lancaster, many people wonder about the history of the spot that they are standing on. With the “History Underfoot Trail,” we attempt to solve some of those questions.

How does it work? Similar to the “Stones & Stories Trail,” you will find QR codes located at several historic locations in Downtown Lancaster. However, these QR codes will be found at your feet in the form of sidewalk decals. After scanning the QR code with your phone’s camera and clicking the provided link, you will be taken to a video that will describe some of the history about that location. Locations such as the Downtown Fountain will “come to life” with past images and information that documents the site’s history!

Michael Johnson will be creating these videos and we hope to have the program in place by June. Just like the “Stones & Stories Trail,” if this proves to be successful, we will look to expand it to other locations in the county. The videos will also be located on our YouTube Channel for those who are unable to walk to these sites!
